After years of dominance at Le Mans, Porsche were becoming the underdogs in the face of strong opposition. A major update to the 962 in 1988 boosted its competitiveness with updates to engine and turbochargers to take advantage of the "M1.7" Bosch engine management system. Full water-cooling for the engine then necessitated a revision to bodywork to address the greater airflow needs.
